Top Durham Cycle Routes to Try

Derwent Reservoir Multi-User Path – Easy and Family Friendly
Discover wildlife and history along the Derwent Reservoir with this 2-mile multi-user trail. Where you will enjoy breathtaking views of the reservoir. The track can be a comfortable walk or cycle and is suitable for walkers, wheelchair users, and pushchairs.

The Satley Loop – A Day Trip Circuit
The Satley Loop can be completed as a half-day or day trip for those a little fitter. This 19-mile intermediate cycle route travels along minor roads and country lanes with two crossings across the A68 with beautiful views to see along the way.

W2W Cycle Route – Follow History
The complete W2W route passes through what can only be described as outstandingly beautiful countryside. The trail stretches between Walney Island near Barrow-in-Furness on the Cumbrian Irish Sea coast to Wearmouth in Sunderland (153 miles) and Whitby (179 miles) on the North Sea coast.

Sea to Sea (C2C) Cycle Route – A Long Distance Favourite
The C2C Cycle Route has made a name for itself as one of the most popular cycle routes in the entire UK. The 140-mile trail starts in the West at Whitehaven or Workington and finishes on the East Coast at Newcastle or Sunderland.

The South Durham Orbital Cycle Route – Circular and Challenging
The South Durham Orbital is 54 miles of challenging cycling, traversing Durham City, Haswell, Newton Aycliffe, Shildon and Bishop Auckland. The route utilises National Cycle Network paths, railway paths, and on-road sections.

Hamsterley Forest – Red Cycle Trail – Challenging and Specialised
You’ll need experience for this one as it’s suitable only for proficient mountain bikers with good off-roading skills. You’ll also need a good quality off-road mountain bike to ensure your equipment makes it through the entire trip.
