Checking into a hotel room for a week is fine. For two weeks it starts to grate. By week three, eating every meal out, living out of a suitcase, and paying for parking on top of everything else stops feeling like a work perk and starts feeling like a grind.
Self-catering accommodation solves most of this, but not all of it is set up well for working professionals. Plawsworth Hall is. We can be found in the village of Plawsworth, four miles from Durham City Centre, a few minutes from the A1(M), and we have the specific things that make a longer work stay actually comfortable rather than just survivable.
What makes the practical difference
The kitchens are properly equipped, oven, hob, microwave, fridge-freezer, kettle, toaster, full set of utensils. That sounds basic, but it means cooking a proper meal on a Tuesday evening rather than hunting for somewhere still serving at nine o’clock. It means buying breakfast ingredients once rather than paying hotel prices every morning. Over a fortnight, that adds up in money and in energy.
Parking is free and on-site, with space for larger vehicles including vans. Wi-Fi is free and high-speed throughout. Linen and towels are provided, and refreshed during longer stays alongside a weekly housekeeping service. If a property has a washer-dryer, many do, that’s one more thing you’re not sorting out elsewhere. A shared laundry facility is also on-site.
Our on-site office and reception team are here if anything comes up. For a long stay, that matters more than it sounds. Having someone to speak to, on the property, is different from calling a number and navigating an app.

The accommodation itself
At Plawsworth Hall we have one and two-bedroom apartments as well as three-bedroom cottages. The larger properties are generally kept available for longer stays rather than short breaks, so they’re worth asking about directly with us rather than relying on the online booking calendar. If dates aren’t showing, calling or emailing us is the right move, and longer stay rates are discussed that way rather than listed online.
The properties are self-contained and properly furnished, with living areas separate from bedrooms. For anyone spending more than a few nights in one place for work, that separation between a space to sit and wind down and a space to sleep is something hotel rooms rarely offer.
The estate covers 40 acres of Durham countryside, with walking tracks throughout. Switching off at the end of the working day without needing to go anywhere is a straightforward thing to do here.
The location for work across the North East
Durham City is four miles away and around ten minutes by car. Chester-le-Street is two miles. The A1(M) is close, which makes Plawsworth a sensible base for anyone whose work takes them across the region e.g. Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Gateshead are all within a reasonable commute. There is a regular bus service nearby for anyone not driving.
For contractors and project-based professionals working in County Durham or the wider North East over weeks or months, we cover the amenities most hotel stays don’t: space, a kitchen, parking, flexibility on length of stay and a rate structure that reflects a longer booking.
Booking a longer stay
For extended stays, it’s better to get in touch directly than to book online. Our team can talk through what’s available, match the right property to the length of stay, and discuss rates. Booking direct with us also ensures you get the best price. The rates on the Plawsworth Hall website are always kept lower than those offered through third-party platforms.
